Five artists (four from Ukraine and one from the Netherlands) met in the spring of 2022 at the “Avondvrede” shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Bergen op Zoom. Driven by the need to create and understand each other, they sought similarities and differences. During walks on the Zuidwaterlinie, they discussed the patriotism of the Ukrainians on one hand and the selfless dedication of the Dutch volunteers on the other. In the Ukrainian national salute, “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!”, they found a framework for the impact art project THE HERO IN YOU. Together, from different perspectives, they embark on a journey to explore heroism and the hero within you. This book provides a glimpse into the stories of Ukrainian refugees and Dutch volunteers, complementing the exhibition THE HERO IN YOU.
